I know everyone says print journalism is dead, but I must confess that I still absolutely love paging through paper-and-ink magazines. There’s a particular masochistic pleasure in having a beautifully glossy article tell you that unless you faithfully perform some anti-aging rituals, you’re going to shrivel like a prune in the coming years. In order to stave off the clock, some women indulge in daily sheet masks, which to me seems like absolute overkill, but for LuLuLun, Japan’s number 1 face mask company, this is par for the course. In fact, their aging care line has just released the Precious Cream, an ultra-rich post-maskemollient moisturizer. Meant to lock in all the hydrating benefits of your sheet mask and deliver an additional boost, it’s the perfect add-on for anyone who’s conscious about wrinkling, dullness, and sagging. The cream is targeted at those 40 and up, but at the ripe old age of 25, the lifestyle mags are already telling me that I am coming face to face with my own mortality, and must start defending my skin right this moment, before it is too late.
The LuLuLun Precious Cream comes in a delightfully pretty little gold and frosted glass jar, and makes for a lovely addition to any vanity. It’s what’s on the inside though, that counts for more. The cream itself boasts a number of ingredients targeted at revitalizing your skin, including Japanese rice bran oil, prized for its soothing and skin nourishing properties. You can find aloe leaf extract in there too, but the main star seems to be yeast cell wall extract. A super humectant, yeast extract has been used in skincare for decades, most famously by SK-II. For this cream, LuLuLun is touting the brightening and skin firming properties of yeast to help combat the effects of aging.
Like most skincare products focused on slowing the ravages of time, the Precious Cream is on the heavy side. As someone who’s always believed that if we somehow found a way to harvest facial oils for energy I’d be able to single-handedly (facedly?) power a whole village, it definitely was a little too rich for my complexion in the muggy Singapore climate. I tried the cream one night as it was designed, massaging in a thin layer after using a LuLuLun sheet mask, and on other occasions as a sleeping mask on its own, or as a base for using the family ReFa CARAT. Each time, I woke up to plump, glowing skin, but my face was also still slightly oily to the touch. Not entirely perfect for me here, but I’m definitely looking forward to using it later this year when we go to see the Northern Lights. I think it’s going to work fantastically where it’s cold and dry.”
